General Guidelines – Berlin’s Tourist Accommodation Tax
As of January 1st, 2014, the Accommodation Tax that has been passed by the Berlin Senate will take effect and be applicable in the amount of 5% of the net room rate on all tourist accommodations. We are required to collect this tax and in turn remit payment to the City of Berlin. Business travelers are exempt from this tax since it only applies to leisure travel. We kindly request your understanding in that we are now required to inquire as to the purpose of your journey. Documentation of the purpose of your journey is voluntary. Business travel may be evidenced through reservations made by your employer, payment by your employer, or an invoice made out to your employer. Self-employed persons or business owners may document the business nature of their journey by referencing their tax number. If no documentation of business travel is provided, the purpose of the stay will be considered leisure travel and the Tourist Accommodation Tax will then apply. In the case of leisure travel, the amount of the tax will be indicated on your final bill and included in the total due.
